How to Install a GFCI Outlet, AFCI and Dual AFCI/GFCI Outlet

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets, Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) outlets, and Dual-Function AFCI/GFCI outlets provide important electrical safety protection for modern homes. This installation guide and video explain how to replace a standard receptacle and properly install a Leviton SmartlockPro® protection device while following manufacturer instructions and applicable electrical codes.

What Is a GFCI Outlet?

A GFCI outlet helps protect people from electrical shock by monitoring current flow between the hot and neutral conductors. If the device detects a current imbalance, it quickly interrupts power to reduce the risk of injury.

What Is an AFCI Outlet?

An AFCI outlet helps reduce the risk of electrical fires by detecting dangerous arc-fault conditions within a circuit. AFCI protection is commonly required in living spaces such as bedrooms, family rooms, hallways, and similar locations.

What Is a Dual-Function AFCI/GFCI Outlet?

Dual-function AFCI/GFCI outlets combine both arc-fault and ground-fault protection within a single device, providing enhanced safety and code compliance for many residential applications.

Understanding LINE vs LOAD Connections

LINE terminals provide power to the device itself. LOAD terminals extend protection to downstream outlets on the same circuit. Incorrect wiring may prevent proper device operation or protection.

Why Won't My GFCI Reset?

Common Causes:

  • No incoming power
  • LINE/LOAD reversed
  • Ground fault present
  • Wiring error
  • Device damage
  • Tripped breaker
