Weatherproof Covers & Boxes Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! Receptacles installed outdoors or in damp or wet locations generally require a cover or enclosure that is suitable for the environment. NEC Article 406.9 addresses receptacles installed in damp and wet locations and the weatherproof protection required for these installations. In wet locations, receptacles may require a listed while-in-use cover that maintains weatherproof protection when a cord is plugged in. Weatherproof covers help protect electrical connections from moisture, rain, snow, dust, and debris.

NEC Article 406.9 distinguishes between receptacles installed in damp and wet locations. In damp locations, such as a covered porch or under a roof overhang, a cover may be weatherproof when the receptacle is not in use, with the plug removed and the cover closed. In wet locations exposed to rain, snow, irrigation, washdown, or similar conditions, an enclosure that remains weatherproof when a plug is inserted may be required. These are commonly referred to as “while-in-use” covers.

Leviton offers both plastic and metal weatherproof covers for different installation needs. Plastic covers are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and are available in clear options that allow the device and plug connection to be viewed without opening the cover. Metal covers are typically selected where a more durable, impact-resistant solution is needed. The best choice depends on the application and installation environment.

Leviton weatherproof covers are available with inserts for different electrical device configurations, including Decora®, simplex, and duplex devices. The interchangeable inserts help accommodate different device types, allowing you to select the configuration that best fits the installation.

Yes! Leviton offers weatherproof cover solutions for switch applications, allowing lights or other connected loads to be turned on and off while helping protect the electrical device from exposure to the outdoor environment.

Note: Code requirements vary by location. Always check local electrical codes and regulations before installation.
